Social media is
a social phenomenon that
is yet to be further explored. Specially when it come to the direct and
indirect impact on Human Recourses management (HRM), it is very important and
opportune to discuss widely. As observed in each and every sector, the Impact
of social media has been drastically increased during last decade. Social ,
Political, cultural and religious aspects are severely affected by SM and
both pros and cons are observed in this engagement.
The term Social Media covers the
usage of online tools and web sites that allow interaction between users to
share information, opinions and interests (Eren,
2013). The opportunities of social media for corporations
and organizations are the eases of reaching out to target audience groups,
taking easier action and putting out their messages through the communication
tools it provides. The nature of social media tools also provides swift and
open participancy in communication within organizations themselves (solmaz,
2012 as cited by Eren,
2013)
Usage of Social Media On HR Recruitments.
Social recruiting refers to the process of recruiting candidates through social media platforms, like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, and other websites, including online forums, job boards, and blogs. Social media can be especially helpful to human resource management (HRM) when it regard to facilitating personnel recruitment promoting learning processes on an individual, team, and organizational level and enhancing community building and a trustful organizational culture through open communication (Kluemper et al., n.d.).
How to perform social Recruiting
Outside of
day-to-day personal use, social media can offer the platform to boost a job
seeker’s professional online presence, help recruiters/employers find the right
talent with the right fit and generally aid the recruitment process. This
can be performed through.
- Identifying potential candidates on LinkedIn.
- Sending a potential applicant a direct message on Facebook.
- Tweet links to available positions, and include relevant hashtags to build long-term cohesion.
- Post employee photos on your organization’s Instagram account with a message encouraging others to join your team, apply for open positions (with links), or add their resume to your recruiting pool.
- Creating videos to share on YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram pages that highlight and outline your organization’s culture.
Most important thing.
Is evaluating and selecting the
most appropriate platform to recruit.
Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn all present potentially
useful tools for social recruiting. Twitter enables organizations to share
links to open positions, news about their company, etc. Facebook offers similar
tools, but also adds the functionality of sharing photos and videos. Instagram
is an ideal place to share photos and videos that highlight your corporate
culture, showcase new products and services, etc. Further, many social media
platforms offer advanced search features that are highly beneficial for social
recruiting. These advanced features can help you learn more about the current
audience of your social recruiting and help you target the right groups moving

Very timely subject and you have presented information attractively.but I have noticed that there are some disadvantages too.
ReplyDeleteIt will nice that if we can practice this method in our country. Is there any single company used this method in Sri Lanka?
Nice stuff Oshada!
Great argument Umesh. Yes I have seen some articles presented draw backs in social recruitments. H/E my opinion is those few comparative disadvantages have been suppressed by remarkable and cost effective advantages of same. In sri Lanka most of the Private banks like DFCC, NTB, Seylan and advertising firms ,Financial companies do there Hiring , recruiting through Linked-In. And further Linked- in reports Professional Linked in profile users in SL is around 1.128 Mn at present. And my idea is this is the best method to use in future references.
DeleteThank you Oshada, I find this is informative and insightful, especially the point sharing the corporate culture through multi-media on social media sites is innovative, and also I agree with the content the social media widen the audience range. However, in my opinion, there are some reservations/questions with HR hiring through social media such as;
ReplyDelete• It is good to target educated and executive segments, however skilled uneducated workers mostly use the referrals and traditional methods for job applications, especially in mass manufacturing companies in South Asian region
• There are still high patrons for traditional methods like Newspaper ads and a good example is the number of ads that go into weekend vacancy papers.
• Other digital security concerns, vulnerable for personal data theft (e.g. Spyware/Ransomware/phishing, etc) and misuse and abuse of data for other purposes
• May lead-to lot of spamming, biased and pool of unwanted applications and may require careful filtering
• According to Datareportal.com, 40% of the world’s total population remains offline and Southern Asia is home to the greatest number of people without internet access.
https://datareportal.com/reports/6-in-10-people-around-the-world-now-use-the-internet
Having said the above, I concur with your content that the trend is moving towards more social media, and situations like the Covid-19 pandemic even boost the use of social media and indeed a good means for HR hiring if used strategically.
Thank you Fayaz for your argumentative comments and ideas. As per your explanation I do observed some draw backs are in this concept. However, I strongly be in an opinion to which, like any other HR concept which has been in a significant evolution, this concept also to be grow in a constrainable environment. Hence This reservations must be addressed and solutions will be provided by the future. And the facts you have highlighted are very much important to Professional HR evaluated in this regard. Thank you
DeleteGreat topic to discuss, I agreed with your article. It will be more convenient for the finder and easier to comprehend than the traditional manner. Social media has become a leading platform for many activities, not only social activities, but also can utilize in many key areas related business. You have taken the E-Recruitment subject and given a clear elaboration by addressing advantages and disadvantages.
ReplyDeleteAccording to ROBERT WALTERS, using-social-media-in-the-recruitment-process
With 85 percent of survey respondents having a LinkedIn profile, it is viewed as the most essential of social media networks among job seekers. Facebook and Twitter were cited as the second (74%) and third (39%) most popular options. 19% of respondents have a profile with Google+, 16% with Instagram and 2% with MySpace. Only one in every twenty jobseekers do not have any social networking profile. The same sites lead in popularity among employers: 69% have a profile on professional social media (e.g LinkedIn), 43% on Twitter and 42% on Facebook. 9% of respondent companies have a profile on Google+ and 3% are active on Instagram.
I wish you all the best for your future posts.
DeleteStrongly agreed Praveen. Even these More competitive social media platforms are interreacting with Governments in Countries. So the Public and Private both sectors can be served by these Forces. Thank your for sharing very informative details with figures.
DeleteHi Oshada , I see this trend in banking sector recruitments . specially in to middle managements and mostly sales staff. This is a great way to recruit people for higher employee turnover job functions like Marketing .
ReplyDeleteVery correctly said Tharindu. These tools may very much appropriate to the Work force like sales , Front managers and free lancer services. They are always fungible too. 100% agreed. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
DeleteDear Oshada; a Topic with a good current value
ReplyDeleteWith the increasing trend of usage of social media, it’s become a trend in modern organization also to communicate. Finding suitable recruitments through social media also an effective communication way of modern organization.
There were 7.90 million social media users in Sri Lanka in January 2021.
The number of social media users in Sri Lanka increased by 1.5 million (+23%) between 2020 and 2021.
The number of social media users in Sri Lanka was equivalent to 36.8% of the total population in January 2021.
Clearly increase can observe in social media usage in locally too, but does this meant the company can find suitable recruitment by touching this sector ?
Do all the skill workers are actively engage in Social Media ?
Will this touch the skill workers in rural areas ? There are great leaders who came from these areas
Yes Sunith. Very informative ideas and argumentative. Actually the main thing you have raised here is Rural community is how much familiar with this Social platforms. Some one can argue the uneducated but skilled people will excluded in this category. But my opinion is the concept is srapidly developing. For example: during this covid-19 pandemic government announced that GCE AL student should only register through their website (online) within 15 days appro.300K candidates were registered. This says that rural people also get a chance to connect this virtual scenario and if they really want, they will do. Likewise this concept should be developed by the combination of private and public sector agent. Thank you very much for your great ideas Sunith.

ReplyDeleteWith the current prevailing situation, I think some organisations do use this platform as their recruitment strategy. There are huge number of social media users even in our country so this is a trend that organisations must improve in future as the recruitment strategy.
ReplyDeleteYour article is very interesting Oshada.

very interesting article oshada good luck
Thank you for the positive comments and ideas Kaushani
DeleteHi Oshada,
ReplyDeleteExcellent work, I personally agree with your stance. Social media recruitment is one of the biggest trends in recruiting over the past few years. These channels can reach out to a wider pool of candidates with less hassle for the HRM Team.
Thank you for the positive comments and ideas Heamaka
DeleteThis is an interesting topic, and you have presented it well. In the present circumstances, I believe certain companies use this platform to recruit. Even in our country, there are a large number of social media users, therefore this is a trend that companies could develop as a recruitment technique in the future.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the positive comments and ideas
DeleteGreat Article Oshada! Really interesting topic & extremely relevant for today's context especially with the worlds movement towards a digitalized future this aspect of HRM will be more & more critical for organizations as it will be able to eliminate most of the hassle involved.
ReplyDeleteAgreed Jude, Thank you for sharing your valuable ideas here.
DeleteA timely topic in the present ciaos global pandemic situation. Among all social media platforms it is to be accepted that LinkedIn in the most prominently used social media tool when it comes to Recruitments.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of applicants, social media platform gives a wide array of opportunity to seek for and on the other had it is highly cost effective tool for an organization.
I see Sri Lanka is also adopting to the changing environment especially Banks, Fintech and IT Firms use the social media platform to the best.
Agreed Arun. Thank you for your valuable ideas and comments
DeleteGood article Oshadha. Recruitment also requires certain skills that cannot be replicated and LinkedIn doesn’t capture the ‘soft skills’ that employers are looking for.” While jobs with low skill levels can easily be filled through a LinkedIn search, for the higher-level roles recruiters are often tasked with filling, the skill of the recruiter comes into play. A good headhunter will be able to identify the more subtle skills and experiences a candidate has, rather than merely looking at endorsements and self-described skills on a LinkedIn profile. So this is mainly suitable for free lancer services.

DeleteHi Oshadha,
ReplyDeleteThis is really interesting topic to continue a discussion. Generally, people recruitment is a critical factor in HRM and the process of recruitment used to do in a physically presence. Due to the current pandemic situation, most of the concepts in people management have shifted their way of processing. One of a key area of out of this is people recruitment or interviewing process. Actually this practice add more benefits to organization as well as to the candidate. Also this is a real convenient mechanism for both parties. Good one !!!
Thank you Duminda for valuable adding.
DeleteThe topic and content is highly timeliness. Now a days most of the companies and head hunters are using LinkedIn as a recruiting platform. Meantime they can get a rough idea about the candidate through Facebook or Instagram. Company can arrange their interviews through Teams as well. Social media plays vital role in recruiting.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the valuable adding
DeleteA good article Oshadha, Businesses are rapidly growing and the Job market is changing, and Organizations are looking for ideal candidates who align with the corporate culture instead just searching for skills and talents. Social recruiting is a good solution for both job seekers and employers if it is implemented with streamlined recruiting process, meaningful onboarding and a well developed retention strategy. Thankyou for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThank you Rukmali for your valuable comments,
DeleteAs you mentioned one of the biggest advantages of HR managers using social media on the job is that it makes the recruiting process stress-free and more successful for the company. HR managers can post job openings on all the company's social media sites, including links to the listings on the company website
ReplyDeleteAgreed Rukmali.. Thank you for your addition
DeleteHi Oshada,The importance of social media in the recruitment world is growing all the time. An Adweek report suggests that 92 percent of recruiters use social media to find the best candidates for each position. The share of companies that use social media for hiring purposes has grown from 82 percent in 2010 to 92 percent in 2015.
ReplyDeleteThank you Bashitha for your valuable feedback
DeleteThank you Bashitha for your valuable feedback
DeleteMillennials nowadays form the majority of the workforce. When they discover a company with an appealing web presence and a good culture, they are more likely to react to job vacancies inside that organization. Companies that have a strong social media presence are thereby appealing to the most motivated and youngest generation in the workforce.
ReplyDeleteGreat topic to discuss.
ReplyDeleteSocial recruitment is enables organizations to reach passive candidates, gather more details , select most suitable candidates, showcase your organizational culture, save money and time. Also it can reach millions of skilled candidates in a few seconds.
Modern hiring practices. There are only a few advantages and disadvantages. Choosing the best and most qualified candidate will be a disadvantage. Do people trust information shared on social media platforms? In my opinion, social media is adequate for immediate recruitment where you want to see real potential
ReplyDeleteGreat topic and timely content. But still there are some cons as everything has two sides in this world. Nowadays people going fake in Social Media which may lead to wrong selection, but still companies should use traditional methods in addition to filter and select the best fit.
