Democratic leadership does great on Organizational performance : Apple Did it. ! (Leadership -MN7185)

How to change your mindset from "I want it my way" or "you can have it your way" to "collectively, we will think the best way."

One of the leadership styles that allows active participation everybody in a decision-making process is democratic leadership, also known as participative leadership or shared leadership (Levy, 2019). Democratic leadership fosters high job performance, eliminates the need for control and formal processes and laws, produces skilled people who are prepared to offer their all, and develops subordinates who create for themselves with desired accountability.

Who they Are ? What do they ?

Bhatti et al. (2012) suggest that democratic leadership style focuses more on people and there is greater interaction within the group. The leadership functions are shared with members of the group and the leader is more part of the team. Similarly, Jones et al. (2016) and Raelin (2012) suggested that the principles of democratic leadership is friendliness, helpfulness, and the encouragement of participation.

How Apple Did ? (Case Study)
Case in point: Apple

Apple was a successful company from 1976 to 1985, before it almost failed in the mid-1990s. Then it became enormously successful again — precisely because it faltered.

In other words, Apple had a vision. Apple lost its vision. Apple regained its vision.

That's rare.

In the mid-1990s Gateway, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems and other companies reportedly zeroed in on Apple as an acquisition target. Years later, many of those brands disappeared. Yet Apple survived.

Apple survived because Steve Jobs learned how to adapt. He became a democratic/participative leader. Jobs started out as a charismatic/laissez-faire leader, and Apple soared. Then he became an autocratic leader, and Apple’s board of directors requested his resignation.

When he returned to Apple more than 10 years later, Jobs combined several leadership styles and added democratic/participative to his repertoire. He hired other experienced leaders and entrusted them to excel. Jobs encouraged his lead designer Jonathon Ive, and he mentored manufacturing expert Tim Cook, now CEO. He let them make key decisions (What Is Democratic/Participative Leadership? | St. Thomas, n.d.).

That's why Apple survived.

Organizational Performance

Organizational Performance is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon in the business literature. Organizational encourage the employees to look beyond their self-interest. The transformational leaders are effective because of several reasons such as the leaders may be charismatic in terms of inspiring the employees, the transformational leaders may meet the emotional need of the employees or they may stimulate the employees intellectually(Al Khajeh, 2018). Tannenbaum et al., (2012) have defined democratic leadership as the leadership in which the decision- making is decentralized and is shared by all the subordinates & also known to motivate the employees to perform better, as their views and opinions are valued. The democratic leadership has a positive impact on organizational performance. The democratic leadership allows the employees to make decisions along with sharing them with the group and the manager. In this type of leadership style, praises and criticism are given objectively and a sense of responsibility is also developed among the employees

Hence.... The democratic leadership styles was found to have a positive influence on organizational performance.

  2. The democratic leadership style of leaders provides their team a lot of opportunity to express their views and allows equal participation in decision-making process and motivating staff members in all areas. Steve Jobs change the Apple to a successful company by being as democratic or participative Leader. But the democratic leadership is most useful if the sub-ordinates are active and active participates in decisions making process. In some cases, group members may not have the necessary knowledge or expertise to make quality contributions to the decision-making process. In these cases democratic leadership can also lead to failures.
